What are the minimum requirements for a video chat? |
Trillian uses high quality video compression and attempts to transmit 15 frames per second, dropping to 10 if necessary. A PentiumŪ III running at 500mhz or greater is required, as is at least 64 megs of RAM. A broadband connection capable of transmitting and receiving data at rates of at least 15 kilobytes per second is also required. |
Does video chat work on non Windows XP systems? |
Yes, but your best experience will still be while running Windows XP. To date, Trillian video chat has been tested on Windows XP, 2000, ME, and 98. We recommend XP/2000, however, as speed and quality begin to degrade under 9x systems. |
Can I video chat with a user running AIM? |
YYes. Trillian is interoperable with video chat on AIM version 5.9. Please note that Trillian does not support video chats with AIM Triton users. |
Can I video chat with a user running MSN Messenger? |
Yes, but only with MSN Messenger 6.2. Compatibility with newer versions of MSN Messenger is currently being researched for a future release. |
Can I video chat with a user running Yahoo! Messenger? |
Yes. Trillian is interoperable with video chat on Yahoo! Messenger versions 6 and greater. |
Can I video chat with a user running iChat AV? |
Yes. Trillian is interoperable with video chat on iChat AV versions 2.1 and greater. |
What about a Trillian-specific feature, like video filters - will these work with other clients? |
Yes. Although other clients may not be able to return the favor, they will still see your video just as you do. |
What is an Emotiblip? |
Think of an Emotiblip as the voice and video equivalent of an emoticon. At any time during a video session, you can stream a song or video to your friend in realtime. You don't need to create a special kind of file, either - MP3s, WAVs, WMVs, MPGs and the like will work just fine. Note that we currently don't support QuickTime MOV files as Emotiblips. |
OK, I'm a curious geek. Why does the client or service matter? |
Some clients don't do as good of a job as others when circumventing NAT, which means the connection may never get established. Some clients can tunnel the entire video session through a server (Yahoo! does this when necessary). Additionally, not everyone transmits at 15 frames per second, and the quality of audio, echo cancellation, and lip synchronization can vary between clients and networks. |
Who's the handsome baby in the middle screenshot? I'd love to meet him. |
His name is Stewie. Meet him at his website. |

What are the minimum requirements for an audio chat? |
A PentiumŪ PC running Windows 98 or greater is required. As with video chats, we strongly recommend Windows XP when engaging in any type of multimedia activity. Older operating systems will work, but your call quality will degrade somewhat. |
Can I audio chat with a user running AIM? |
No. While Trillian does support audio to AIM 5.9 during a video chat, a standalone audio chat is not currently supported. To date, AIM only offers the deprecated "AIM Talk" feature for pure audio chats, and Trillian does not support this. |
Can I audio chat with a user running MSN Messenger? |

Yes. Trillian is interoperable with audio chat on MSN Messneger versions 6.2 and greater. |
Can I audio chat with a user running Yahoo! Messenger? |

Can I audio chat with a user running iChat AV? |

A note on sound quality. |
Trillian uses different audio compression methods depending on a number of different factors. When you're using the video chat feature, a faster and less bandwidth-consuming codec is chosen. When you're in a pure audio chat with another Trillian user, Trillian attempts to use the Speex codec for superior sound quality. This codec is currently not supported by any other clients, and Trillian will utilize different codecs as is necessary to interoperate with as many clients as possible. |

Does Trillian Basic support activity history? |
Trillian Basic continues to support message history as it always has, by logging all messages to a text file on your hard drive. You can view the history with your favorite text viewer. |
How do bookmarks work? |
At any point during a conversation, you can right click and create a bookmark at any given location. You can also do this inside message history's timeline view. Once a bookmark is set, use the bookmarks tab within message history to easily flip to important points in your conversations. |
What are assets? |
The asset view in history collects files, display pictures, and any saved video, audio, or picture files that you transmit or capture from a contact. Forget where you saved that important document from your friend? Check the assets tab - Trillian is already keeping track of things for you! |
If I upgrade to Trillian Pro later, will my logs work in the new viewer? |
Yes. |
I'm an existing Trillian Pro user, and most of my contacts are stored inside of meta contacts. Does the new message history support meta contacts, or will I have to load multiple history windows? |
The new message history does indeed support meta contacts! Simply right click a meta contact and "View Contact History" - you'll find everything you need inside. |
