 4. Configuring Trillian
 4.1. Preferences

To get to the Preferences you can right click the Trillian icon in the tray by the clock and go to Options->Preferences or you can click File->Preferences from the buddy list.

  General


  Basic Options



Windows Shortcuts:
  • Add Desktop Icon: Creates a desktop shortcut for Trillian
  • Add Start Menu Group: Creates a Start Menu entry for Trillian
  • Load Trillian at Windows Startup: Makes Trillian start with Windows


Trillian Startup
  • Show loading window: A progress window is displayed while loading
  • Show Connection Manager: Display the Connection Manager after loading (and logging into a profile)
  • Hide Contact List: The Contact List will be hidden by default
  • Prompt on Two instances of Trillian: A warning will be displayed when more than one instance of Trillian is launched

System Tray
  • Fade alert windows out: Will cause system tray alerts to fade out. (Win2k/XP only)
  • Contact list always shows on click (no toggle): Will allow contact list to be shown, and (if already unhidden) brought to front
  • Allow double click (will slow down single click response): Trillian will distinguish between single, and double clicks of the system tray icon. A delay will result, as Trillian waits for a possible second click
  • Switch Behavior: Toggle-switches the behaviors of single/double clicks on the System Tray between actions on the left"

  Events



Idle Monitor

  • Based on when I'm using my mouse or keyboard: Determines when you are 'idle' by monitoring mouse/keyboard activity
  • Never automatically set me away or idle: Trillian will not track your idle status


Status Change
  • Set me "back" when I send an instant message
    "If checked, Trillian will see you as 'no longer away' when you send a message."


Play Sounds
  • Do not play sounds while away: Trillian will disable sounds when set to "Away"
  • Play inbound sounds only if window is out of focus: Trillian will play a sound when instant messages are received to windows only if they are not in focus
  • Suppress repeated contact list sounds after 2 seconds: Trillian will not play sounds rapidly in sucession. Instead, when a sound is played, any repetition of this sound will be supressed for 2 seconds


Away Messages
  • Away Message: Select a global state message from this list
  • Add: Creates a new global state
  • Edit: Edits the settings for the selected global state
  • Remove: Permanently removes the selected global state, and all settings for it



        Events: Advanced Tab



Events trigger actions within Trillian. If you want a particular sound to be triggered when you get Yahoo mail, you can set up and event in this section to make that happen.

From this screen you can add, edit, and remove events.

  Contact List



List
  • Hide offline contacts: Entries for offline buddies will be moved to the 'offline folder'
  • Show medium icons: Each entry in your contact list will display an icon indicating messanger service
  • Suppress empty groups: If a folder in your contact list displays no entries, it will be hidden from view
  • Show group counts with (online/total): Displays the number of entries for each folder in its tooltip, and on the list
  • Show secondary icons (alerts, warnings, etc): Displays non standard icons for buddies who have assigned alerts, warnings, etc.
  • Show recent online/offline icons for [ ] seconds: Number of seconds to show 'just disconnected' buddies with a different appearance
  • Enable docking (taskbar entry must be off, see below): Allows the contact list to be attatched to the edges of your screen, while shrinking usable desktop space
  • Auto-hide when docked: Causes a docked contact list to automatically hide when mouse is moved away from list. Causes it to reappear as mouse is moved close to list



Miscellaneous
  • Show taskbar entry (updates on reload of Trillian): Next time Trillian is launched, an entry in the Windows Taskbar will be displayed for the contact list.
  • Add "Send file" menu in Windows Explorer: When you right-click on a file, an option to send file to a Trillian contact will be displayed.
  • On multiple connections, if statuses are the same, only show that status in icon holder: When many connections are (dis)connected for any medium, its icon in the contact list's medium button bar will display status only if they are the same for all such connections.

  Windows




Flash windows when new text arrives: If a new message is received, its window will flash in the Windows Taskbar
  • Stop flashing windows after 10 flashes: If checked, flashing will cease after 10 flashes


Window Positioning
  • Attatch to container "Away" when away: If checked, messages will be hidden in a container named 'Away' accessible through Events
  • Don't position based on previous location: If checked, Trillian will not recall the 'last closed' container/position of windows when they are opened


Focus Windows
  • When a window is not active (does not affect windows in containers)
    Turn it transparent "X" % Visible: Set transparency for out-of-focus windows (only for Operating Systems that support transparency)
  • Turn it black and white (high-performance machines only): Set out of focus windows to turn black and white (hardware intensive!)
  • Do Nothing: Keeps out of focus windows from changing at all


Miscellaneous
  • Close window after sending a message: Closes window when message has been sent.
  • Expand task item group if new item appears underneath: With "MyStuff", it shows all pending activities and expands new activities when checked
  • Highlight the task item on activity: When there is activity on the list, this option will highlight it

 ajmTo toggle a Status Window's visibility, click on a specific medium's icon at the bottom of the contact list, then choose Toggle Status Window
 InvarielThere's also a mostly hidden tray on the right side of your main Trillian Window. Look for it, it's there. Popping it open contains handy links like the Trillian site, and the Status Windows for every medium that you are connected to.

        Display



Medium Specific
  • Apply to all mediums: With this checked, everything in this section will apply to all of your connections.
  • Show Text Formatting: Check this if you want to see your buddies font and color changes.
  • Show Emoticons: Shows emotes like smiley faces if your buddy types them in. If unchecked you will see the characters :)
  • Play Emotisounds: Plays the sounds attached to an emote if there is one included.


Show Time Stamps Shows timestamps in the chat window as well as the log
  • Format: Choose how you want the timestamps to be displayed.


Miscellaneous
  • Autofit images into display: Changes the size of images to fit in the window.
  • Links activate on double click: Double clicking a link in a chat window will take you to that window. Left unchecked, single clicking performs the action.
  • Links open in a new browser: Links will open a new browser when clicked. If unchecked the link will activate in your current browser.
  • Text buffer (in lines): The amount of text to show within the display area of the chat window (if you have "Auto show history within new message windows" checked in the Preferences->Message History section
  • Scale Emoticons to size: Makes the emotes the same size as your font.
  • Show last focus line marker: When chatting with a buddy and you change focus, Trillian will put a line in the conversation to show where you left off (your window only)

        Edit



History
  • Edit History ____ lines: The amount of past conversations you want displayed in the windows.
  • Use up/down for history always (normally ctrl-up/down): Uses up/down for history


Sending Messages
  • Select which key or series of keys will skip to the next line or send the message.


Miscellaneous
  • Control-u clears line: Control-u clears the line
  • Convert Tabs to __ spaces on paste: Converts tab to the specified number of spaces when you copy/paste text into Trillian.
  • Control-e shows emoticon window: Pressing control+e will bring up a window where you can choose emoticons from a list

        Fonts



Default Font
  • Apply to all mediums: If this is checked your changes to the fonts will apply to all of your connections. If you want to have different fonts for different mediums, uncheck the box, select the medium, and make your changes. Trillian will remember your settings for each individual medium.

        Colors



Use colors specified in skin
  • Check this box to use the colors that were coded into the skin when it was created. If it's unchecked you can choose the colors using the section below.



        Initial



Mediums
  • Apply to all mediums: If checked, Trillian will apply the settings below to all Instant Messaging mediums' windows


On creation of a chat window...
  • Automatically show the window on my desktop: Show new messages on your window when they arrive
  • Auto-minimize the window: If checked, new windows will pop up, but will be automatically minimized out of view when received
  • Hide the window and notify me via the systray: Hide new windows until you choose to acknowledge them. Use the 'event button' in the contact list to see specific windows or click on the system tray icon to have all windows shown. Use this if you play games.



Below preferences are for new windows not yet seen by Trillian.

Status Windows
  • Initially show status windows: If checked, status windows will be popped up when a new connection is created. Otherwise, these windows will be hidden. Use medium icons in contact list to show these windows as needed



Size, location and container
  • Apply to all window types: If checked, apply settings below to all types of windows for selected medium(s)"
  • Size: Input height and width, in pixels, for the default window size."
  • X and Y: Relates to the X and Y position of newly created windows."
  • Initial Container: Creates a default container for new message windows."
  • Transparency: Sets default window transparency. Does not apply to windows in containers.

        Word Matching



Word matching allows you to set events to happen when certain words appear in chat windows.

Use the "Add" button to add new events like playing a sound when someone types your name into a window.

  Message History



What to log
  • Apply to all mediums: When this box is checked it will log the same windows for each medium. If it is unchecked, you can change the medium and then change the "Automatically Log" section for each individual medium to log different things for different mediums


Location
  • Folder: The location where the log files will be stored.
  • Create folder based on chat service: Creates individual folders within the log folder for each chat service (AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, etc.). This can make it easier to search.


Viewer
  • Use the default association for .log: Uses Windows default viewer for log files
  • Program: Select a program to use when viewing logs


Miscellaneous
  • Auto show history within new message windows: Shows recent history in the message window when you close and reopen a chat window to the same person.
  • Size of buffer to show: Sets the ammount of data that is shown in the chat window

  File Transfer



Folder
  • Folder: Select the folder where incoming file transfers will go when they are received.
  • Create folder based on chat service: Creates a different sub-folder for each chat service so that they are easier to search
  • Create folder based on your login name: Creates a sub folder for each of your connections. If you have multiple login names for each medium this can be useful.
  • Create folder based on sender's name: creates a sub folder for each user that sends you a file transfer


Accepting
  • Users on contact list: Choose if you want to auto-accept files from users on your contact list
  • Users not on your contact list: Choose if you want to auto-accept files from users that are not on your buddy list (not recommended)


Scan for virus after download
  • Virus Checker: Create a path to your virus checkers .exe file here


Miscellaneous
  • Minimize incoming file transfer windows: Automatically minimizes incoming file transfer windows to the task bar
  • Close window when download completes: Automatically closes the transfer window when the transfer is completed

  Buddy Icons



My Buddy Icon
  • Use one icon for all connections: You can choose to use one buddy icon for all of your connections, or you can uncheck the box and choose a different icon for each medium
  • Browse: Search your hard drive for a buddy icon
  • Clear: Clear your buddy icon
  • Get More Buddy Icons: Takes you on a search for the perfect buddy icon


Accept Icon
  • Users on contact list: Choose if you want to be alerted to automatically view the buddy icon of users on your buddy list. "ask" will give you an option to accept or deny the buddy icon after you review it
  • Choose if you want to be alerted to automatically view the buddy icon of users that are not on your buddy list. "ask" will give you an option to accept or deny the buddy icon after you review it


Miscellaneous
  • Process 'aim:' buddy icons in web browser: Some websites provide quick access to buddy icons by using the "AIM:" protocol. With this option checked you will be able to click the link and set the icon as your buddy icon.
  • Remember icon from previous conversation: Stores your contacts buddy icon from one conversation to the next.

  Proxy



  • Use below proxy settings for all mediums: Uses the proxy settings for all of your connections. IF you need to use different settings for different mediums, uncheck this box and change the medium in the drop down box. Trillian will remember the settings for each medium individually.


  • Use below proxy server to resolve names: Check this box if you want your proxy to resolve the names of the servers that are used to connect to the various mediums.


Use Proxy: Check this box to use a proxy.

This is where you enter your your proxy information. If you don't know your information, you can leave this area blank. You may need to consult your system administrator to get your Host and Port.


  Profiles



  • Add: Add a new profile
  • Edit: Edit an existing profile
  • Remove: Remove a profile


Required to edit this account

  • Password: Enter a password if you want to use one for your profile. If you set a password here, you will be asked to enter it when you start Trillian using that profile.

  Skins



Skin Chooser
  • Skin Name: Choose the skin you want to use
  • Description: Describes the skin
  • Get More Skins: Takes you to the skins section of the forums
  • Advanced: Takes you to the advanced options of the skins section



        Skins Advanced Section



Interface Set
  • Interface: Choose between Default, Minimal, or Tabbed interface. Requires restarting Trillian to make the change


Emoticons and Sounds
  • Emoticons: Choose different Emoticon sets if they are installed (see Installing Emoticon packs tutorial)
  • Choose different Sound Packs if they are installed. (see Installing Sound Packs tutorial)

  Languages



Choose a language
  • If you have other language packs installed you can choose them from here

This is where you see the version you are using. Also in this section is the

 JasonYou need to mention how to hide and unhide containers. There is a red button to hide but no explanation how to locate it once hidden

  Plugins



Plugins are a way to add functionality to Trillian Pro. You can use them to check your POP3 E-Mail accounts, watch your stocks, and get the latest news. The plugins are available to members on the website.
